Edna's story

ImageI worked at Rowntrees. I never thought to do anything else.  I started working there when I was 14 and I worked there until I was 60.

I was born Leeman Road and I lived there all my life. Community was really important to us back then. You knew your neighbours and if someone were sick, you would help out. It’s just the way that people were back then.

Our house was a small terrace house, so we were a bit squished, but you didn’t mind because it was your family. I remember that we had a wringer to wash out clothes, and before that we had a Peggy Stick. I used to help my mother around the house to make sure that all the work got done. We weren’t allowed to play very much. That’s not because my mum was mean, but we had to get things done. You just did what you had to.
